Dr. Joanne Pohl is a Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing and the Primary Investigator for INC.

She has more than 25 years experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse/NP working primarily in nurse managed centers (NMCs)with underserved populations. Over those 25 years she has also served in faculty positions primarily teaching in NP programs in Michigan .

She directed the Adult NP program at the University of Michigan for 8 years before accepting the position of Associate Dean. Her research has focused on family caregiving, smoking cessation and most recently on the outcomes of care and cost of care in NMCs as well as student experiences in these NMCs, and community responses to the centers. She was the PI on a W.K. Kellogg Foundation project that created the Michigan Academic Consortium (MAC) a partnership with four Michigan universities and Michigan Public Health Institute that had an educational, policy, and outcomes of care focus. The work of the MAC advanced the efforts of Academic NMCs toward creating the National Network for Nurse Managed Health Care funding that is now working nationally to create a data warehouse for NMCs.

Dr. Pohl has published over 40 articles, presented at numerous conferences-many of which are invited as well as peer reviewed. She has been active in informing policy regarding NPs and NMCs at multiple levels.

She continues to teach in the masters and doctoral programs at the University of Michigan and practices at one of the School of Nursing 's NMCs. She is also the President Elect of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties.
